Use the quadratic formula...

[-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a

You use this formula when you have a quadratic equation ( ax^2 + bx + c).

In this case: a=2, b= -7, c= -86.

Plug into the formula...

[7 +/- sqrt(7^2 - 4(2)(-86))] / 2(2)

= [7 +/- sqrt (737)] / 4

Equating this you get x = 8.537 and x = -5.037
