you should get a beaker or something which indicates the volume on it. Fill water up to a given point (enough to completely cover the block) and take the reading.

Then place the bloack in the water GENTLY to prevent air bubbles which will distort your answer. The water will rise, take the reading and subtract it from the 1st reading. So the difference between the readings will give you the volume of the object. (If you find air bubbles, gently tap the beaker to burst it)

If the object is regular, i.e, is a shape where the recording of the length, width and height is possible, simply multiple all of them for an accurate answer, if it is irregular, like a stone, this method (water displacement) is the best.

How do you find the density of a block of wood?

you weigh the block on a balance get its mass if it is a regular shape block so the volume should be length * weadth * breadth (side * side * side) the density = mass / volume

How could you find the volume of wood using a displacement can?

The piece of wood will float (partially submerged) in water. Filling up a displacement can with water and letting the water drain at the sprout is the starting point. When the water stops draining, place a dry (empty) measuring cylinder to collect water coming out of the sprout from here on. Gently lower the wood block on the water. It floats. Gently push the block down until it is just submerged. The volume in the displacement can is the volume of the wood block. The tricky part is how to push the block down without agitating the water, making the reading inaccurate. One possibility is to have a box of known weights around. Carefully place standards on the block without the weights toppling over -- starting with a heavier standard and proceeding to lighter standards (available down to 1 mg). If the standard makes the block submerge below the top surface, start over. Some volume uncertainty will remain for one run. Repeating the exercise and averaging the data will lower the uncertainty. If the piece of wood is irregular -- not a regular shape, we can try the following. find a weight that will let the block submerge completely in water with a string. Measure the volume of water displaced. Then do the weight and string without the piece of wood and measure the volume of water displaced. The difference in volume is the answer for the piece of wood. Again, repeating the experiment reduces the measurement error.

How is the mass of a rock measured?

You put it on a scale or a triple-beam balance. It'll give you the mass. However, if you have the density of the rock, divide it by the volume to find the mass mathematically. You can also find the volume by the water displacement method, where you placed the rock in a graduated cylinder/beaker filled partially with water and record the difference between the original water level and the raised water level after placing the rock inside the container.

What measurements and what calculations would you make to find the density of the wood in a rectangular block?

Volume

What method of measurement is used to find the volume of an irregular solid?

The water displacement method is typically used to find the volume of an irregular solid. The object is submerged in a known amount of water, and the increase in water volume is measured. This increase in volume is equal to the volume of the irregular solid.

Related questions

One method used to measure the volume of an irregular solid involves immersing the object in water?

The method used to measure an irregular solid by placing it in water is called dispersion. If you note the level of the water before placing the object in and the level after, you can find the volume of the object by calculating the difference.

How do you determine ice's density?

In order to determine the density of ice, one must know if the shape is a geometrical figure as the volume is needed to find the density of an object. However if the block of ice isn't any definable shape, then, by measuring a certain amount of water in a beaker and placing ice into it, you are able to find its volume by subtracting the original amount of water by the ice altered volume of the water. Another way to find the volume of ice is to force a phase change causing it to become water. Once it is water, it is then you are able to find its volume by placing it in a beaker. However during the process of melting, the ice looses density by an unsubstantial amount, enabling the results to be accurate. After the volume is found, the mass must be identified in order to find the density of any object as D=M/V. This can be found simply by weighing it on a sensitive scale. Finally after all of the variables are obtained, plug them into the equation: Density=Mass/Volume.

Which two tools would help you determine the density of a block?

Something to determine volume (like a bucket of water or a ruler), and a balance to determine mass. Divide the mass of the block by its volume to find the density of the block.

How do you get a density of a block?

You will need the mass and volume of the block. To find mass, use an electronic balance. To find volume, use length x breadth x height. For irregular solid, use the water displacement method. The density is mass divided by volume.

What tools do you use to find the density of a block?

You need a scale to measure the weight and ways to submerge the block and measure the water to determine the volume.

What is water displacement?

Water displacement is simply when something (e.g. a block) is put into water, and the water level rises. This is because the block is taking up space, and the water has to move somewhere, and the only place to go is up.

How do you calculate if a block of wood will float in water or not?

If the density of the block is less than the density of water, then the block will float. Density of water is close to 1 gram per cubic centimeter. So measure the block and calculate its volume (Length x Width x Height). Use a scale to find the block's mass. Then divide mass/volume to calculate density. If you've measured in grams and centimeters, then the units will be g/cm³, then compare this to 1 g/cm³.

How is the volume of an irregularly shaped solid measured?

The volume of an irregularly shaped solid can be measured by placing the solid in a known quantity of water in a container with measurement markings. Take the new volume and find the difference between this and the old volume. This is the volume of your irregularly shaped solid.

How do you find the density of a potato?

First weigh the potato (in grams). Next, place the potato in a tub of water, and measure how much the volume of the water changes upon placing the potato in. This gives you the volume of the potato (in mls). Then divide the mass (g) by the volume (ml) to get the density in g/ml.
