The perimeter of any figure is the total length of all sides of the figure... 'outer boundaries'... in a circle this is called the circumference.

e.g.

Square : side x 4

Rectangle: (Length X 2) + (Width X 2)

Parallelogram: 2b + 2c ... where b & c are the lengths of one of the opposite sides.

Trapezoid: a + b + c + d ... sum of all four sides

Triangle: a + b + c ... sum of all three sides

Circle: 2 x pi x r

*** So you would 'measure the outline'. This comes in handy with irregularly-shaped perimeters.
