You divide it up into regular shapes: rectangles, triangles, semicircles. Then use the formulae for these shapes and add the results together.

If you cannot do that - because the shape is just too irregular, draw a scaled version of the shape on a board of uniform thickness. Cut the shape out and find its mass (or weight). Also, draw a square foot on the board to the same scale and get its mass. The square footage of the room is the ratio of the masses (or weights).

You could also draw a scaled version of the room on a grid representing a unit area. Count the number of squares that are at least half inside the sketched room. Ignore all squares that are less than half inside. The number of squares inside multiplied by the square footage of each square will give the approximate area of the room. The finer the grid, the more accurate the result (but it will also be harder work).

How do you find the sq ft of a floor?

Measure the length of the room in feet (12 inch increments) and then the width of the room in feet (12 inch increments). Next multiply the length by the width and you will have the square footage. If your room is an odd shape then break it down into quadrilateral shapes (squares and rectangles) measure length and width of each, multiply, and add the totals together for total square footage of a room.

How do you figure out the square feet of a room for carpet?

If a room is 196 square feet how many 12 x12 carpet tiles do you need?

A square foot IS 12 inches by 12 inches. So unless the room is odd-shaped (not square or rectangular) you should be able to do it with 196 carpet tiles. You should add 5 to ten percent for mess-ups. So if it is not a monetary issue, get 210 or so.

If you square an odd number will the answer be odd or even?

How many linear feet to surround 1500 square feet of lawn?

Unfortunately, "It Depends" - - To determine square footage, you have to know whether the lawn is square, rectangular, circular, or some other shape. Assuming a rectangle (or square), the square footage is determined by multiplying the length by the width. Linear footage is determined by adding 2 times the length plus 2 times the width. If the lawn is a square, there is only one answer (as there is only one solution which will give 1500 square feet: length and width of 38.73-some odd decimal, meaning 2 times length and 2 times width gives a linear footage of some 154.92 feet). However, if the lawn is rectangular, there are an infinite number of answers. Giving three examples to show the range: 1) If the lawn is 50 feet long by 30 feet wide, that will give (50x30), or 1500 square feet of area and ([50x2]+[30x2]), or 160 linear feet. 2) If the lawn is 100 feet long by 15 feet wide, that will give (100x15), or 1500 square feet of area and ([100x2]+[15x2]), or 230 linear feet. 3) If the lawn is an alleyway in the middle of a big city and 1500 feet long by 1 foot wide, that will still give the required (1500x1), or 1500 square feet of area...but a whopping ([1500x2]+[1x2]), or 3002 linear feet around! (Note that the square gives the least linear footage possible for a rectangular-shaped lawn) Have fun figuring out circular, elliptoid, and other funny shaped lawns...

How big is a room 240sq feet?

A room measuring 15.5 x 15.5 = 240.25 sq ft - which is near enough for a square room. There are several variable measurements to the length times width of rooms that are long and narrow, odd shaped , etc.

How do you know if you have 2 acre of land?

Measure two adjacent sides of your piece of land if it's square, rectangular, or a parallelogram in shape. Multiply those two numbers (in feet). If the number you get is less than 87,120, then you don't have two acres. If you have an odd-shaped piece of land, you will need to find a way to find out the square footage.
