Don't leave your ceiling vapour barrier with a break in it. At the place where you buy your fixtures ask for a vapour barrier plastic boot to go over the fixture to seal the existing barrier. The easiest method to install this boot is from the top side in the attic if possible. Make sure that you use vapour barrier adhesive tape to seal the existing barrier to the new fixture boot.
