The easiest way would be magic. If you're looking for a much slower, but low-key and low-effort method, try watching anime or reading manga with japanese and english translations. After a while you start to pick up a few words here and there. Otherwise take a class or use a language learning software like Rosetta Stone.

In Japanese writing, Kanji, there are just over 1900 in general use. By the time you leave high school you have learn them all. You do start in grade 1 learning a few and progressively work you way through them.

Live there. If you cannot do that, study it in school. If classes are not available, try the following; 1) Buy a book of Japanese characters, or find resources online. Study Kanji - it will help in the future. 2) Buy a textbook to start learning, or learn online. 3) Like Japanese music? Buy a CD - read the words. Learn all the words - in Kanji, hiragana and katakana...this will help with your reading, comprehension and listening... 4) look for children's books in Japanese - or online. 5) Lots of people use manga - if you like comic books, more power to you! 6) If you can meet Japanese people, good. But most of them outside of Japan want to speak English, so be prepared.
