Try the release just to the left of the centre of the bonnet. Otherwise use a crow bar on it to 'gently' lift it
There may be an open bonnet. The bonnet may not have been closed properly, as can happen.

get another person to pull the handle, and thump the bonnet/hood at the front in the middle, but not hard enough to dent the metal. If the catch is just a bit stucky due to lack of use this should shake the bonnet open. Then lubricate the mechanism, and open it more than once a year!
