The hub at the transmission has a split pin in it. Drive this out with a punch. Sometimes you can get the axle out of the spindle by just popping out the tie rod but usually I take the lower ball joint loost to.

try changing the spark plugs you will get loads of highley technical answers on here but its normally the simple solution that works i had the very same problem on my impreza and all it needed was a new set of plugs..
Timing is done by Engine computer with imfo from cam and crank sensor . It is not adjustable. If you are replacing timing belt, a Gates timing belt comes with detailed instructions of belt and pulley timing marks. New belt has marks on it that correspond with cam shaft pulleys and crank pulley.

The check engine light comes on to tell you that something is wrong and the computer knows what it is. Use an automotive code scanner to find out what's wrong. Fortunately you and the computer agree... something is wrong. It's just that the computer knows a lot more about what's likely to be the problem.
I am assuming you have an automatic transmission, because the manual transaxle does not have a filter. It is located under the transmission pan and should cost about $40 plus a new gasket and labor if you have someone do it for you.
