The firing order on all small block chevys is 18436572. It should be imorinted on the intake. Trace the number one plug wire back to the dist. It's the one on the left (drivers) side of the engine at the front of the motor. The dist rotates clockwise.
Back firing problems on 351 windsor?
There can be a number of reasons for the backfire. If you changed plugs you could of crossed 2 wires. Same if you have just changed the dist cap. there can be a crossed wire or you didn't put them back in the same place. Bring the #1 plug up to top dead center on the compression stroke then remove the dist cap & see if the pointer is pointing at the # 1 plug. Check to make sure the wires are in the correct firing order at the cap & trace each wire to the plug that it is suppose to go to. Another reason if you removed the dist from the engine it may not of been put back in in the same place. Worse one is you may have a bent or burnt intake valve. Also look for carbon tracks on inside of cap or a small crack on cap. replace it you see any. You can check the condition of wires/cap at night. Must be dark-start engine & look close at wires & cap. Any sparks will tell you that can be one of you problems WAtCH OUT FOR THE FAN & ANY MOVING PARTS I talked to my son on this problem & he told me that the rotation goes in the opp direction then a 351 cleveland. Check the rotation of dist & wire your cap that way

After bringing your engine to top dead center, line the distributor up so the rotor faces the number one cylinder. Rotate the dist. so the closest terminal lines up with the rotor. This will be your number one in your firing order. Mark that terminal #1. Tighten the dist. in place. Put your wire from the cap to #1 cyl. Now follow the firing order for the rest of the wires. The dist. rotates clockwise so put the wire on the next terminal on the left and route it to the next number cyl. in the firing order. Do this till all are connected. timing is nonadjustable, i know you have a distrubtor but I've done many of these, your dist. has a nocth where it only goes in one way,the sticker on the front of your fan shroud will tell you. the owners manual should tell you what degree the timing is supposed to be you theset it at that degree with the number one piston in the fireing order but you have to pull your distributer up and out where it don't turn when thenumber one is set at the degree sugested by manual restab the distributer with rotor facing the number one plug niple on the cap
