This is a little hard to explain without being able to draw a diagram.

The Distributive Property applies to an expression like 3(5x + 2). This means that the whole of the binomial (5x + 2) is multiplied by 3. To do this you have to multiply 5x by 3 and also multiply 2 by 3, so it looks like this:

3(5x + 2) = 3(5x) + 3(2).

Notice that the 3 is "distributed" (spread out) over the two terms inside the parentheses. Continuing the example, simplify to get 15x + 6.
