Well, the formula for the area of a rectangle is base times height equals area, or (b)(h)=(a). so if you have a square that is 4 inches by 4 inches your equasion would be (4)(4)=16, or 4^2=16 (4 squared). The 4 squared only works if you're multipling the same number. For example 5 times 5 is equal to 5^5 and they both equal 25. That wouldn't work with a rectangle that is 5 by 7. You would have to do 5 times 7 and get 35 units squared, or 35 square units.
