In todays modern notation: MDCXLII and (IV)D
MMMMD
In roman numerals, numbers greater than 3999 use parentheses around, or a horizontal line above, the numbers that are multiplied by 1000. Writing 3999 is written as MMMCMXCIX, but the number 4500 would be written as (IV)D.
MMMMD or as D(V) D(V) = -500+1000*5 = 4500
The accepted convention does not permit values over MMMCMXCIX (3999) to be notated in Roman numerals (the letter M cannot be repeated more than 3 times). Breaking with convention, MMMMD would be 4500. In the middle ages, an overline would multiply the value by 1,000, while vertical lines either side of a numeral multiplied the numeral by 100. Using that convention, we could represent 4500 as 45 * 100 which would be |VL|
MMMMD or as (IV)D Numerals in brackets indicate multiplication by a thousand. (IV)D = 4*1000+500 = 4500
4500 = MMMMD
