A decimal number is simply a way of representing a number in such a way that the place value of each digit is ten times that of the digit to its right. A decimal representation does not require a decimal point.

So, for example, 437 is a number in decimal form since

  • 7 represents 7 units,
  • 3 represent 3 lots of "ten times units" or tens and
  • 4 represent 4 lots of "ten times tens" or hundreds.

say if it was 37/100 it would be 0.37 because 100 has 2 zeros after the decimal point has to as well. If it was 199/1000 it would be 0.199
