In 'Word' at least you can use the text formatting menu to set the index in superscript. Highlight the digit and click on Superscript.

Alternatively, use the ' ^ ' sign, as in 1.3 X 10^2 (=1.3 X 100).

'Word' also has an Insert > Symbol menu that contains all the main arithmetical and mathematical operators including the X for "times". It looks right on Answers because the web-site uses Ariel font.
