The reason it is so easy to use is that there is a consistent difference between different measurements and that the names of different measurements follow a pattern.
Different prefixes mean that you have a different amount of a 'basic' measurement (meter, gram).
Example: 1 centimeter (cm) equals to 0.01 meters (m).
Example: 1 kilogram (kg) equals to 1000 grams (g).
The point is that it is easier to convert from, say meter to kilometer than from feet to miles, because one kilometer is 1000 times larger than one meter, but one mile is 5280 times larger than a foot.
