A person on horseback can travel about 30 miles a day. The Pony Express did not ride 2000 miles when it was active. That is the length of the country.
Under fair conditions, the Pony Express riders could carry the mail 2000 miles in 10 days.
They used a relay system . Every few miles there was a station where the rider would quickly transfer his mail bags and himself to a fresh horse.
The Pony Express could average 12 to 15 miles per hour, including stops. The speed was maintained by having fresh horses every 10 to 15 miles along the greater part of the routes. The rider and mailbags would quickly transfer from horse to horse, with a rider riding for an average of 10 hours, but sometimes as long as 20.
The pony express didn't last long, but it was thought it could deliver mail faster. It was seen as the most convient means to have east and west communicate. The pony express traveled through 8 states and covered 2000 miles.
