A cubic feet is L*W*H, this goes for cubic yards or such, now, you can't just convert cubic ___ into 'something' you must also make that 'something' cubic 'something.' As you convert cubic feet into cubic yards(how many feet in one yard?), after you've done that, you divide the feet twice it's own(L*W*H again). Don't forget it's not a ratio of 1in³:1y³.
