The funnel or infundibulum receives a yolk from the ovary. It moves to the Magnum where the inner and outer shell membranes are added, along with some water and mineral salts. It moves down to the Isthmus where the Albumen (egg white) is secreted and layered around the yolk. From there it moves to the shell gland or uterus where initially some water is added, making the outer albumen thinner. Then the shell material or calcium carbonate is added. At this point pigments may also be added to make the shell colored. It remains here for about 21 hours before moving to the Vagina/cloaca where it passes through to the outside world.
