An easy way to work this out is to first count the square at the bottom. Next you have to count the edges of that square, because each of these edges will be connected to 1 more face. There are four edges, so that means four more faces. Added to the one face for the square gives us 5 faces total.

This technique can be used for working out the faces of all pyramids - triangle based would be 4 faces total, octagon based would be 9 faces total, and so on.
