Note an octahedron has 8 (oct) sides.

Faces refers to sides = 8

edges are where faces meet = 12

vertices are where edges meet = 6

to count them yourself

picture 2 pyramides with square bases of the same size put together base to base

the square based pyramid (imaging the Great Pyramid of Giza for example)

has 4 triangle sides and one square side (the bottom / base)

it has 4 bottom points (vertices) + 1 top one.

its edges are 4 on the bottom and 4 going up from the the corners to the top

when put together base to base the bases disappear (no longer outside but internal to the pyramid and therefore don't count.

2 four sides become your 8 sides

the four bottom points on one pyramid merge into the others giving you only 4 base points plus your 2 "top" points.

total of 6 vertices

edges you have the 4 base edges plus 4 from each corner going up and 4 going down to the "top" points

that make 12.
