It's kind of strange compared to most jobs. It's fairly typical for a firefighter to be "on duty" for 24 hours straight, and then off for 48. "On duty" does not necessarily mean actually fighting a fire; firefighters can sleep, cook, eat, play games, or whatever during that 24 hours, but they have to be at the fire station and prepared to roll out if an alarm comes in.
