You may find it easier to work such questions out by doing two calculations here rather than 1.

If we first ask how many hours is it to midday then: 12 - 6 = 6 hours.

Then if we ask how many hours is it from midday to 3.30pm then: 3 1/2 - 0 (we can make midday equal 0 rather than 12 here) = 3 1/2 hours.

So the total (and answer to the question) is 6 + 3 1/2 = 9 1/2 hours.

Another convenient way is to have the time in 24-hour notation.

Therefore 3.30pm would be 15:30

so

15:30 - 6:00 = 9:30 = 91/2 hours.
