If "mile" and "square mile" could be converted into each other, we wouldn't need two different units.

"Mile" tells how long something is, or how far apart two places are.

"Square mile" tells how much surface is covered, like the turf on a football field, or the carpet

on the floor of a room.

You don't drive 200 square miles in a day, and you can't find a can of paint to cover a mile.

They're completely different things, even though they use the same word.
