The specific gravity of sand is between 90-130 lbs/cubic foot. http://www.reade.com/Particle_Briefings/spec_gra2.html#S 5 US gallons = 0.668402778 cubic feet 90 * 0.66840277 = 60.15625002 130 * 0.668402778 = 86.89236114 So, a 5 gallon bucket will hold between 60 and 87 pounds of sand, depending on how much liquid is in the sand and if it is packed down.
5 gallons = 1155 cubic inches = 0.6684 cubic footWe don't know the weight without more specific knowledge of the type of sand.

I weighed a cup of sand which equalled 12.45 ounces (used 12.5 ounces for computing purposes). So, 1 gallon of sand (16 cups) equals 200 ounces or divided by 16 ounces/pound, equals 12.5 pounds/gallon.

1 US gallon is 128 ounces.
A gallon is a unit of capacity. A pound is a unit of mass. The two units are therefore incompatible.
No animal should live in a bucket. I recommend buying a couple gallon plastic tank. Put sand, water, food, etc. On average they can live for 6 months in a bucket. But, they will probally kick the bucket soon.
