Multiply the length by the width of one side of a gabled roof and then multiply by the slope (pythagorean theorm; e.g. 9 squared + 12 squared = 15 squared) and double it (two sides to a roof). This suare footage will give you the amount to divide by a bundle of shingles which covers 32 sq. ft.

most of the time, if it is a three tab, 20yr shingle it takes 3 bundles, some thirty year shingles take 4 bundles, and most if not all 40yr and above take 4-5, because they are thicker, and there are less shingles per bundle.. hope this helps..

It depends on where you buy them. Normally shingles are grouped horizontally in groups of three or four. Either glue or small tacks holds together the pre-grouped shingles.

also, 3 bundles of 30 year shingles = one square=100 sq ft coverage.

------------------------------------

A standard 3-tab shingle contains 1/3 of a square.... that is, it takes three bundles of shingles to cover 100 square feet. With architectural shingles (those made more to look like wood shakes), it takes 4 bundles to cover 100 square feet. The architectural shingles are laminated and are heavier. Due to their additional weight, there are less shingles in each bundle keeping a bundle of shingles to a weight of about 80 lbs.

3 bundels of shingle is a square and 1 square is 100 square ft.

Measure the roof to find how may square feet there are and go from there. You will need a few bundles more than the actual square footage for the starter row and the cap at the peak.

In most shingles three bundles covers 100 sq. ft. some of your heavier more wind resistant roofing with a longer lifespan takes 4 bundles per. "square", the proper term for 100 sq. ft. So if your using what is called a "3 tab",one layer shingle, 33. 33sq. ft.
