The language used in this question indicates some confusion, so we must clarify some points first.

First, although a yard is a unit of length, when you go to a commercial garden center, a "yard" of soil is really a cubic yard. In other words, it's a volume; it has length, width, and height (or depth). But people in the business just call it a yard.

Second, a square foot is a unit of area, not volume, so you cannot convert from cubic yards to square feet. However, a cubic yard of soil will cover a certain area of ground, but you have to know how deep you want the soil to be.

If you're covering the ground to do a reseeding of lawn, it doesn't have to be too deep, so a (cubic) yard will cover a good amount of ground, but if you're filling in some flower beds or vegetable garden, it won't cover as much area.

A cubic yard of soil will cover approximately an 18' x 18' square (324 square feet) to a depth of one inch.
