Any object can remain in orbit around the earth indefinitely, at any distance from the earth's surface, so long as it remains above any part of the atmosphere thick enough to slow it down. Long duration orbiting behavior is possible anywhere above about 220 kilometers (140 miles) above the surface, out to millions of miles.

The International Space Station orbits at a nearly constant altitude of about 240 kilometers. TV satellites orbit at a distance of about 22,400 miles. The moon ... earth's only natural satellite, orbits at an average distance of about 238,000 miles.

Rather than ask for a description of the region in which satellites CAN operate, it would be much more informative to talk about the region where satellites CAN'T operate. It's much smaller.

Distance from earth to gps satellite?

Navigation satellites move around Earth at an altitude of about 1,243 miles to 22, 223 miles and at about the same speed of rotation. These satellites are in what is called Medium-Earth orbits (MEO).

LEO satellites orbit the Earth with an altitude as low as miles?

A low Earth orbit (LEO) is an orbit around Earth as low as 100 miles and up to 1,240 miles close to the Earth's poles.

What layer of the atmosphere do GPS satellites orbit in?

SatellitesSatellites orbit in outer space, not in the earth. They are sent to outer space where the gravitational pull of the earth pulls them around, just as the earth is pulled around the sun in a similar manner. The layer is the exosphere. It greatly depends on what the satellite is for and who owns it how far up it orbits. Imaging satellites need to be close to the Earth, so they orbit about 130 miles up. Communications satellites are generally at 23,000 miles up. GPS satellites are up about 13,000 miles.

How many functional satellites orbit earth?

At present there are around 24-32 satellites orbiting in medium earth orbit(11,000 miles)more the satellites more accurate navigation is produced.

How far is satellites from earth?

satellite should be at least 42000Kms from center of earth .As the radius of earth is around 6370Kms ,the height reduces to 35000Kms.

Which layer of the atmosphere do communications satellites orbit?

Most communications satellites operate outside of the earth's atmosphere. The GPS satellites are about 23,000 miles from the surface of the earth.

What are Communications satellites?

Communication satellites receive signals from antennae on the Earth's surface, or from other satellites, amplify the signals, and beam them back to Earth. Because they are hundreds or thousands of miles up, their signals can cover a larger area than most radio or television signals broadcast on the surface, because of the Earth's curvature. (Radio waves don't go around corners well.) Some communications satellites are in quite low orbits, around 150 miles high. Others are in "geostationary" orbits at about 22,500 miles, where their rotation around the Earth is the same speed as the Earth's rotation, so that they stay above a particular spot all the time. Most broadcast satellites for TV, phone service and satellite radio are geostationary.

How far is satellites from the earth?
