you can have either one or three x-intercepts, but now 2. because two real roots means 1 imaginary root which is not possible since imaginary roots come in pairs (2,4,6,8...)

hyperbola * * * * * A hyperbola is not a cubic function. A cubic function is of the form y = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d where a, b, c and d are real constants and a is not 0. A hyperbola is a functon of the form y = 1/x : quite different.

What are cubic functions?

A cubic function is a polynomial function of degree 3. So the graph of a cube function may have a maximum of 3 roots. i.e., it may intersect the x-axis at a maximum of 3 points. Since complex roots always occur in pairs, a cubic function always has either 1 or 3 real zeros.
