It will take 300000 btus at 12000 a ton and a ton of air will be 400 sq feet so. 10000 sq ft divided by 400 is 25 tons of air then multiply 25 times 12000 btus and you get 300000

Why does an air conditioner cools a room while the refrigerator warms a room?

Because the refrigerator moves heat from the inside of the fridge to the outside, dumping it into the room. On top of that, the actual machine that moves the heat also gets warm, and sheds it heat into the room too. The A/C always have to have two sides/units, to allow it to move heat from inside the room to outside the room. Basically, a room with an A/C works pretty much like a room-sized fridge. There are industrial grade fridges which work like A/C units, with a separate heat dumping unit that can be placed outside the room/building. They take a lot more plumbing to install, so you rarely find them in private homes.

Use more heat with window open if thermostat in another room?

Even if the thermostat is in another room, you are releasing some heat out that open window. This means that the furnace (or boiler) will have to run longer to make up for that loss of heat, and the room in which the thermostat is located will take longer to come up to the set point of the thermostat. The HVAC Veteran
