It depends on what you are trying to kill. The dart should be able to go through and puncture the other side of a small rat.

A 40 caliber blowgun most generally doesn't have the power to kill anything larger than rats and ocasionally squierrls with the thin wire darts. Shooting a dart with an attached broadhead or using a larger caliber such as the .625 is more humane for hunting purposes.
