1x3 being 3 inches square, if the steel you are asking about is A-36 plate, then it would support approx. 50,000 lbs. per square inch. For a total of 150,000 if evenly loaded. After which it will go into plastic deformation. It does not mater as to thickness, rather plastic deformation rate. An interesting side note though. Steel gets stronger the more you MASH on it or strech it. So the aforementioned 50,000 lb. rate will quickly jump to 70,000 lbs. or more, upon work hardening. Pretty cool!
