Numbers are important because they make it possible to count things, measure things,

and compare different things that different people counted or measured.

So far, that's not very impressive. What makes it really important is that without those

abilities, it's almost impossible to trade stuff, buy stuff, sell stuff, pay for stuff, save up

enough stuff for later use, or build anything ... the things that make civilizations out of

cavemen.
