You need to be able to read to learn anything beyond what your teachers can tell you. And then you have t be able to discuss what you know with other people - to tell them about your take on various topics and that requires you to be able to articulate your views effectively. Although you can sometimes talk about these, that method will limit the number of people that you can communicate with.
