Scientific notation is used to express very large or very small numbers.

instead of writing 15,000,000, you can express the same number by writing it as 1.5 * 107

or, you could express the very small number .00000015 as 1.5 * 10-7

to express a number in scientific notation, simply place a decimal point after the first number (in a large number) or before the last number (in a very small number) and multiply by ten to the nth power, where n is the number of digits following the decimal point (in a large number) or negate the number of digits before the decimal (in a very small number).
