It's hard to say without seeing your coin, but it sounds as if it might be a "broadstrike" error. That happens when a coin is struck outside of the retaining collar in the press. The pressure of the dies causes the coin to spread out beyond the normal diameter that is enforced by the collar.
So many cents are made each year that most errors are fairly common. Lincoln cent broadstrikes currently go for around $5 retail.
It's called waning when it gets smaller and waxing when it gets larger. Just think, waxing a candle makes it larger, and waning...idk, lol.
