The data is internally stored as bits (ones and zeroes). To interact with humans, the keyboard uses letters; but as soon as you press a key, a series of electrical circuits are activated, and this is represented by zeroes and ones (for example, zero when no current flows, and one when a current flows - or the other way round, depending on the convention used).
