From his own 15 yard line to midfield (the 50 yard line) is 50 - 15, or 35 yards. From midfield to the opposing team's 45 yard line is 50 - 45, or another 5 yards. He has advanced the ball 40 yards for scoring purposes.

However, if he zig-zagged, or ran diagonally across the field to do so, he would have run much further.
