If the second owner of a used 2001 that was bought in January finds a lot of problems with it are there any ways to get out of this?

Yes - find a third owner!! That's my problem now... I suggest all VW owners unite and complain to VW. Let's tell them Americans won't tolerate their non-recall of obvious and common problems.. e.g.. engine oil leaks on Passat that require tearing an engine apart just to cure it... sorry but other than I like driving it on the freeway most everything else sucks....
