84 = 2(a x a) + 2a
42 = a x a + a
0 = a x a + a - 42
0 = (a - 6)(a + 7)
gives: 6 and -7.
check: 6 squared = 36, 7 squared = 49. 36 + 49 = 85
The result is the same for (-7) and (-6)
Answer: -7 and 6. (although -6 can be considered as smaller than -7 being less negative)
