If you buy wire, rope, cable, etc. it is probably 1000 (from mille). Unfortunately, "M" in metric is Mega (million...and always a capital letter M), and "k" is kilo (1000). Small "m" is meter. To be safe you should double check on it, but usually pricing is such that a 1000X error is hard to make.
