The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) began in 1938 and the NCAA Tournament debuted the following year. The NIT field expanded quickly and became the premier tournament during the 1940's; so much so that the NCAA scheduled their tournament after the NIT to avoid directly competing with it. This allowed teams to compete in both tournaments, with City College of New York being the first and only school to win both titles in the same year (1950). The rules were subsequently changed so a team would only qualify for one or the other.
The most recent team to win a championship and not return to the tournament was last year's champions, the UNC Tar Heels. UNC won the national championship over MSU last year. This year UNC did not make the NCAA March Madness tournament everyone knows and loves but did make it into the NIT tournament.
The last time the Duke Men's team was in the NIT was 1981(Purdue 81, Duke 69 - last NIT game) and (Duke 75, Alabama 70 - last NIT win.)
