An easy way to check your answers: put your answer (1) in place of your variable (x).

So, does 3x1 + 7 = 2x1?

The left hand side equals 10, but the left hand side equals 2.

1 doesn't make the equation work, so it is not a solution.

To solve the equation (or any linear equation of one variable), get the x on one side and all the other numbers on the other side by doing the same arithmetic (+,-,x,/) to both sides.

3x + 7 = 2x Subtract 2x from each side.

x + 7 = 0 Subtract 7 from each side.

x = -7

So the solution to 3x + 7 = 2x is x = -7.

3x + 7 = 2x

Subtract '2x' from both sides

Hence

x + 7 = 0

Subtract '7' from both sides.

x = -7

The answer is '-7' Minus seven'. NOT '1'
