A perfect number is a number that is the sum of its divisors (the divisors exclude the number itself).

When the sum of the divisors is greater than a number then that number is abundant.

As the number itself is excluded from the divisors then the only divisor of 31 is 1.

So, 31 is a deficient number.

Note : The first few abundant numbers are 12,18,20,24,30 ... and these continue to be even. The first abundant odd number is 945 = 33 x 5 x 7 for which its divisors total 975.
