Yes its mandatory as per HEC rules. You have to pass NTS general with at least 50% marks no later than your 1st semester of Mphil (MS).

You must have a NTS to schedule your exam and to launch the exam at the test center. You can have a duplicate NTS sent out if you go to the NASBA website www.nasba.org First click "Exam" then on your state. Then the "NTS" box and scroll down, at the bottom there is a link which you can click to have your NTS reprinted.
