The simple answer is that the Earth is a sphere, a really big ball. This means that everywhere there is a tiny, tiny (convex) curve to the surface of the Earth. The curve is so weak that it's not really visible under normal circumstances.
The more complicated answer is that over a smaller area, the surface can be anything. The Earth has plenty of depressions, dents and dimples.

The Cenozoic era's surface was very bumpy and that when the Earth was flat. When the world started getting round Earths surface started getting flat, but that when there was a lot of earthquakes, which wiped out all the dinasours and made them exstinct.
