a2 - 4 can indeed be factored. It's what we call a difference of squares. This is a special case when one perfect square is subtracted from another one. Any binomial in the format a2 - b2 can be factored out as (a + b)(a - b).

In this case then, it would be:

(a + 2)(a - 2)

A polynomial that can not be factored is called?

If a number cannot be factored it is a prime number.

7w squared minus 17w plus 16?

7w2 -17w+16 is a polynomial that cannot be factored. We call this a prime polynomial. There are also no like terms to combine. So nothing much more can be done with this polynomial. If you wanted to find the roots or the zeros, you could use the quadratic formula.

What is the polynomial when each of its factors is prime?

Completely Factored

Nope! It's (x+ 1) (x-1). :)

How do you factor 3x cubed x squared minus 25?

well, i believe it goes like this (not certain) 25 is the only not prime number so... 3xcubed x squared -5 squared

How do you factor 2xcubed minus x squared minus 162x minus 81?

I believe it is prime as you have written it. change the end to + 81 and it factors as (2x - 1)(x-9)(x+9)

When is an expression factored completely?

When the expression is broken down into its prime factors it is factored completely.

How do you completely factor x to the fourth power minus ninety one?

You want to factor (x4 -91) First notice that the factors of 91 are 1, 7, 13, and 91. If we try them all , we see that x4 -91 is a prime polynomial. Even though the polynomial is prime, that is cannot be factored over the set of rational numbers, it is factorable over the set of irrational numbers. x4 - 91 = (x2)2 - (√91)2 = (x2 - √91)(x2 + √91) = [x2 - (√√91)2](x2 + √91) = (x - √√91)(x + √√91)(x2 + √91)

When you would use the word prime as the answer to a factoring question?

When a number can only be factored by 1 and itself or cannot be factored at all it is considered prime.

What is a prime factor form?

The fundamental theorem of arithmetic says any integer can be factored into a unique product of primes. The is the prime factored form.
