Since it is a CYCLE, the overall volume change from minimum volume to maximum volume and back must sum to zero, thus the volume expanded must equal the volume compressed. Now, bear in mind that the Carnot Cycle consists of 4 steps:

  1. Reversible isothermal expansion of the gas at the "hot" temperature, T1 (isothermal heat addition or absorption).
  2. Isentropic (reversible adiabatic) expansion of the gas (isentropic work output).
  3. Reversible isothermal compression of the gas at the "cold" temperature, T2. (isothermal heat rejection)
  4. Isentropic compression of the gas (isentropic work input).
Although when you graph the cycle on a PV diagram, it looks pretty similar, there is no requirement that the volume change in step 1 matches the volume change in step 3, nor that the volume change in step 2 match that in step 4.

Why does gas have no specific volume?

gas has no specific volume because the molecules can be compressed or expanded, which would change the volume. like there is a smaller volume of gas in a can of soda then in the atmesphere around you.

Why can a gas be put into a container which has a smaller or larger volume than the gas?

Because the gas hasn't not a form and can be compressed or expanded.

Is compressed air less dense than expanded air?

Compressed air is MORE dense than expanded air. Density is the measure of an objects mass (measured in grams, kilograms, pounds etc) divided by its volume (cubic centimetres, litres, cubic feet, cubic yards etc). D= m/V Decreasing the volume of an object, or in this case a fixed amount of air, increases the density because the mass does not change but the volume gets smaller. Increasing the volume (expanded air) causes the density to decrease.

What state or matter that has no definite volume and no definite shape is?

liquidNO! Liquid has a definite volume (at a stable temperature) which is why hydraulic systems work. GASES have no definite volume and no definite shape - the take the form and volume of their container - and can be expanded or compressed.

Why a gas completely fills any container you it in?

since gas has no definite volume or shape it can be expanded or compressed, the particles will spread till they reach the walls of their container

What is a compression ratio?

Compression Ratio is the ratio between the original volume and the compressed volume in combustion chamber. The compression ratio is denoted as CR. It is the measure of how much air-fuel mixture is compressed during the compression stroke in the case of the gasoline engine (in the case of the diesel engine only air is compressed. Compression ratio is found by dividing the volume of stroke of the cylinder (swept volume) and clearance volume when the piston is at BDC by the volume when the piston is at TDC (ie clearance volume). Compression ratio= (Swept volume + Clearance volume) / Clearance volume. For example engine has a Swept volume of 700 cc. It has clearance volume 50 cc. Compression ratio= (700 + 80) / 80 =9.75: 1 It means Air fuel mixture is compressed to 1/9.75 of its original volume during compression stroke.

What assumes the shape and volume of its container?

water. :)

A gas is compressed from an initial volume of 5.75 to a final volume of 1.21 by an external pressure of 1.00 During the compression the gas releases 121 of heat?

121

Can the particles in gas be compressed into smaller volume?

Yes, a gas can be easily compressed.

How many states of matter can be compressed?

One. It is gas as gas does not have a definite shape or volume thus it can be compressed. Liquids do not have a definite shape but it has a definite volume, making it unable to compress. Solids have both a definite shape and volume thus it also cannot be compressed.

Takes the shape of the container but not the size?

Gases do not have a definite volume, which means that they can be expanded and compressed, depending on the pressure the gas is under. Gases also do not have a definite shape, so they take the shape of whatever container they are in. Unlike gases, liquids do have a definite volume because they are not easily compressed. However, like gases, liquids take the shape of their container, too. Solids have definite volume and definite shape.
