Not all portable hard drives work with every laptop. Some portable hard drives are formated for specific types of laptops. For example a portable hard drive that is formated for a Mac cannot be used with a windows laptop
While external hard drives have the availability to work with multiple computers, it would be false to say every external hard drive works with every computer.

BIOS is only to detect the drivers. You will see each driver in the BIOS setting. If you have 2 hard drives, you will see 2 drives in BIOS,but if BIOS Only recognize 1,that means 1 drive have a problem. Happen to me many times. Then when finally you are in windows(desktop)then you click on my computer and click on every hard drive then you will see the size of every drive. But not the 1 that was not recognized, because it will not be present.
On NTFS drives, Its called the MFT (Master File Table), on FAT drives it called FAT (File Allocation Table). This is how your hard drive knows where every file on your hard drive is. Without this your hard drive will be like a big libray with all the books pages on the floor, you would have have a hard time putting a book together.
You would have to search online for an external floppy disk drive or buy an old PC that has one. In the "old days" every computer had a built-in floppy drive. It would always be right in the front. About a 4" wide slot.

External floppy drives use additional hardware to connect to a computer, whereas an internal floppy drive uses a simple cable to connect to components already integrated into most motherboards until very recently. Another factor is that external USB floppy drives are a seldom-used item, whereas an internal floppy drive could be leftover stock from when they were a common commodity in every computer.
