If the numbers have no common factor then LCM is their product. 16 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, 12 = 2 x 2 x 3, so there is a common factor of 2 x 2. One occurence of this must be omitted when multiplying ie LCM = (2 x 2) x (2 x 2 x 3) = 48
