The gfci indicator light is on but appliances connected to the gfci outlet are still powered what is causing this?

The last answer is incorrect. Some GFCI's are designed to light up when working, some are designed to light up when tripped, some are designed to have different color lights depending on normal or tripped conditions. The only way to tell if the receptacle has power is to TEST it. If the GFCI is supposed to be tripped and power is still available, it is either not operating properly or it is not wired properly.
